7 Red Flags When You Hire an n8n Freelancer on Upwork or Fiverr
Seven red flags when you hire an n8n freelancer on Upwork or Fiverr, what each one looks like, what to ask instead, and a six-line checklist before you pay.

A small business owner on r/smallbusiness hired a Fiverr freelancer to set up automated workflows in a CRM. The draft emails ignored the CRM's own template and carried no logo or signature. Then a client who had already booked and paid got an automated email about proposals, making it "the third client to get that email in the last two weeks." One reply put its finger on the bigger problem: an unfinished flow had been connected to live customers before anyone tested it. The owner let the freelancer go.
The post never names the tool, and it does not matter, because the same thing can happen with n8n. Use Fiverr for one small, well-defined workflow and Upwork for a scoped custom build paid by milestone, and on either one check the seven red flags below. Each comes with what it looks like and what to ask instead.
Red flag 1: "Done" with no proof it ran
What it looks like: screenshots of a green workflow in the editor, or a flow switched on for your customers before you saw a test run.

Ask instead: "Show me the execution that wrote to the real destination, then show me what happens when it fails."
Success messages lie. The founder of a private real estate lending marketplace told me the site's contact form did not work. Its server route only logged each submission and returned success, so every enquiry since launch had been thrown away with no error anywhere. I rebuilt it as form to n8n to an email to the founder, and the route now answers 502 when anything fails. n8n can fail the same way: a Code node that throws can still send the caller a plain 200.
Red flag 2: A gig package for a custom problem
What it looks like: a fixed package called something like "AI chatbot automation" that lists features but no failure cases.
Ask instead: "Which failure cases does the price cover?"
I built a direct message classifier for an online English academy. A small language model on the server sorts each message into one of 8 categories, then tags the contact and switches the bot on or off.
Four things broke on the way: the CRM fired two webhooks for the same message, n8n in Docker could not reach the model because localhost inside a container is not the server, a tag-removal step was computed but never sent, and message text with quotes broke the JSON body. The model answered in about 22 seconds cold and 7 seconds warm. None of that fits in a gig description.
Red flag 3: The freelancer hosts it and you do not own it
What it looks like: "I'll run it on my server, you just pay monthly."
Ask instead: "Will it run in an n8n account in my name, with you as a user?" A real estate investor in New Mexico had me build four workflows, and they went into the investor's own n8n Cloud account from day one. If a freelancer must host, ask for an export of every workflow and a written plan to move it.
Red flag 4: No answer for "what if the event arrives twice?"
What it looks like: a pause, or "that won't happen."
Ask instead: "How do you make sure one message produces one action?" The academy build is the example above: two webhooks for one message. On a med spa booking bot in New Jersey, overlapping polls made the bot reply twice until I claimed each message in a database before replying.
Red flag 5: "Active" is the only proof the trigger works
What it looks like: "It's activated, it will run."
Ask instead: "Fire a real test event and send me the execution." On that New Mexico build, triggers switched on through n8n Cloud's public API never registered. Editing part of a live workflow can also leave its webhook dead until someone switches the workflow off and on again.
Red flag 6: Tested only with clean input
What it looks like: a demo with tidy example text.
Ask instead: "Test it with quotes, emojis, very long text and empty fields." Real people type messy text. That is how quotes broke the JSON body on the academy build.
Red flag 7: The gig price is the whole price
What it looks like: a price that grows at checkout and says nothing about monthly costs.
Ask instead: "Is that price all in, and what do I pay each month after launch?"
Both platforms publish their fees. Fiverr's help center adds a 5.5% service fee to every buyer payment, plus $3.50 on orders under $200, so a $150 order costs you $161.75. Upwork's client pricing page lists a 5% marketplace fee on the free Basic plan (3% for eligible US clients paying from a bank account) plus a one-time contract fee of $0.99 to $14.99. Its help center says the Basic fee can reach 7.99%, so check your own billing page.
On the other side, Upwork freelancers pay a service fee of 0% to 15% per contract. Those figures are from the platforms' pages in October 2026. Fees come out of what the freelancer earns, so they shape the quote. Hosting, n8n Cloud and AI model usage are separate bills. I put numbers on them in how much does an n8n developer cost.
What is the six-line checklist before you pay?
Run it on any freelancer, including me. For a longer screen, use my scored interview for an n8n developer. If a studio looks safer, check the n8n automation agency myths first. An AI agent in the scope adds the guards from my n8n AI agent production list, or you can book a call and bring the proposal.
- The n8n instance is in your name, with the freelancer as a user.
- You saw a real execution against the real destination, not a screenshot.
- You saw a failure alert fire.
- A test sent the same event twice and produced one result.
- A test used messy input.
- Fees and monthly running costs are in writing.
