How Much Does an n8n Developer Cost? 12 Buyer Questions

How much does an n8n developer cost? Hourly rates, project prices, n8n Cloud and server costs, and the price of running without any monitoring or alerts.

By Carlos Familia, CRM & AI automation expert. Updated . 8 min.

A buyer on r/n8n asked what it costs to hire someone for a short-form video workflow: paste in a news story, get a script, an avatar, B-roll and subtitles, and save it all to Google Drive. The buyer also asked what running it once a day would cost. Build estimates ran from $250 to $500 up to a half-joking $1,000, and one reply suggested trying it yourself in an afternoon. On running costs, one reply said $5 to $10 a month and another warned that video generation adds up. The most useful line: "quality implementation isn't cheap, but neither is rebuilding it three times."

How much does an n8n developer cost? In the published guides I opened, all written by firms that sell n8n work, hourly rates run from about $20 for junior work to $250 for senior and architect work, and agency rates run from $85 to $450. Whole projects start around $1,000 for two or three workflows, reach $5,000 to $15,000 for advanced systems and go up to $50,000 for enterprise builds with AI copilots. Running costs come on top: n8n Cloud starts at €20 a month billed annually, and a server to host your own starts at $6.49 a month, paid upfront. The twelve questions below are the ones buyers ask, answered one by one.

What is the hourly rate for an n8n developer?

Two guides publish rate tables. Compare them side by side and do not treat any one row as the answer.

Range chart of hourly rates from two published guides. Flowlyn freelance: junior $35 to $65, mid-level $70 to $110, senior or architect $120 to $250. Ciphernutz US and Canada: junior $20 to $40, mid-level $40 to $80, senior $80 to $150, architect $150 to $250. Flowlyn agency: junior $85 to $115, mid-level $130 to $180, senior or architect $200 to $450.
Hourly bands from two guides. Both are written by firms that sell n8n work.
LevelFlowlyn, freelanceCiphernutz, US and Canada
Junior$35 to $65$20 to $40
Mid-level$70 to $110$40 to $80
Senior$120 to $250 (senior or architect)$80 to $150
Architectincluded above$150 to $250

Between them, mid-level work lands anywhere from $40 to $110 an hour, and neither table is the market rate. Flowlyn is an AI automation agency. Ciphernutz is an IT services firm in India.

Location moves the number. Flowlyn gives regional bands: $100 to $300 or more in North America, €90 to €180 in Western Europe, $50 to $100 in Eastern Europe and Latin America, and $25 to $75 in South Asia and Africa. Ciphernutz shows the same pattern, with mid-level work at $40 to $80 in the US and Canada and $20 to $50 in India and Asia.

A lower rate says nothing about whether a developer would pass my n8n developer interview, so test every bidder the same way.

How much more does an agency charge?

Flowlyn lists agency rates of $85 to $115 for junior work, $130 to $180 for mid-level and $200 to $450 for senior or architect work. That is well above the freelance band at every level. Hours matter as much as rates, and I compare the two models myth by myth in n8n automation agency vs freelancer.

How much does a whole n8n project cost?

Ciphernutz publishes project ranges:

ProjectPrice range
Simple workflow, 2 to 3 flows$1,000 to $1,500
Medium complexity, 5 to 6 flows$1,500 to $5,000
Advanced workflow system$5,000 to $15,000
Enterprise automation with AI copilots$15,000 to $50,000

Its own FAQ gives a wider overall range, $300 to $50,000 or more. As an illustration of the hourly route, 20 hours at the mid-level freelance band of $70 to $110 comes to $1,400 to $2,200 before server and tool costs.

For scale, here are two builds of mine. For a real estate investor in New Mexico I built four workflows: foreclosure sheets scraped into Airtable, auction listings kept current, skip tracing, and a push to a field canvassing app. For a real estate wholesaler I built one nightly job that writes one AI summary note, one task and one tag per contact. I do not publish my own prices. Scope your project the way those two were scoped: named systems, named volumes, named failure cases.

Should I pay a fixed price or by the hour?

Pay a fixed price when the scope is named, like four workflows between four systems. Pay hourly for discovery, or when an integration is unknown and nobody can say what the other side's API allows. Pay a monthly retainer for monitoring and small changes after launch.

Two quotes for the same job often differ because one covers the happy path and the other covers failures. When a daily call queue I built went live, rate limits silently ate 28 contact reads and 16 tag writes. Retries with backoff, limited concurrency and failure counters are what fixed it, and a cheaper quote may leave them out. Put failure cases, alerts and handover inside the price.

How much does n8n itself cost?

On the n8n pricing page, Cloud Starter is €20 a month billed annually with 2,500 workflow executions, and Pro is €50 a month billed annually with 10,000 executions. All plans include unlimited users and workflows.

Cost layers for running n8n: the build, n8n Cloud monthly fees, a server if self-hosted, AI models and data lookups billed per use, and prepaid balances that need top-ups.
Five cost layers, from the one-time build to the balances that run dry.

n8n defines an execution as a single run of the entire workflow, however many steps it has. A workflow that runs about 80 times a day fits inside Starter's 2,500 executions. The page also points to a self-hosted version on GitHub. Then you pay for the server and for whoever maintains it.

What does hosting cost if I self-host?

Hostinger's n8n hosting page lists VPS plans with n8n included. The 4 GB plan is $6.49 a month and renews at $11.99. The 8 GB plan is $8.99 and renews at $14.99, and the 16 GB plan is $12.99 and renews at $28.99. Plans are paid upfront.

The server price is not the cost of running it. Cheap plans share hardware. My own VPS was once slowed down by its host, with 87 to 90 percent of its CPU time taken away, and database health checks every 5 seconds were a big part of the load I had put on it. Someone has to watch for that.

What do AI models and data lookups cost on top?

Model usage is billed per token by the model provider, so it grows with conversations. Ask your developer for a monthly estimate at your volume, and for a cap or an alert if usage jumps.

Data lookups have their own meter. On the New Mexico build, three test records cost about $0.12 each to skip trace, so I capped enrichment at 25 records per run to protect the budget. Volume is the usual surprise. In an r/n8n thread on monthly running costs, one builder described teams that budgeted $30 a month for a document workflow and hit $300 in month two because more documents came through than expected.

Testing an AI agent costs money too. In my QA setup a phone test costs about $1.80 per run, a text test about $0.23 and a chat test about $0.003.

What happens when a prepaid balance runs out?

AI automations often depend on prepaid balances, and an empty balance fails quietly. A med spa in Pennsylvania had an outbound voice caller of mine running when the voice account ran out of credit, and the dispatcher still ended "success". The result was 79 failed dials, and 11 Facebook leads were never called.

On a life insurance build in California, the prepaid voice account ran out of credit and all 8 phone numbers on it went dead at once. Three inbound calls during the outage may have been real prospects. Ask your developer where each balance lives, who tops it up, and which alert fires at a low balance.

What is the hidden cost of running without monitoring?

I cannot put a dollar figure on it, but I can show what it looks like. On an auto body shop's account in Texas, the changelog said the chat router was live. It was switched off, with zero executions. About 181 Facebook conversations went unanswered by the bot while it was off.

Monitoring is cheapest at build time. At a mortgage brokerage in Florida I put every active workflow, 33 in all, on one error handler, with an hourly check for anything that was switched off. That second check exists for exactly the body shop's kind of failure. If you think something of yours already runs unwatched, paying an n8n consultant to look costs less than finding out from a customer.

What should a quote include?

  • The systems, volumes and triggers in scope, named one by one.
  • The failure cases and the alerts that cover them.
  • A test plan that does not touch your customers.
  • Handover: an export of every workflow and a one-page note per workflow.
  • Who owns the n8n instance and the server. It should be you.
  • Monthly costs for n8n, the server, AI models and prepaid balances, listed separately.
  • A support window after launch.

If the build includes an AI agent, ask for the guards behind each of my n8n AI agent production mistakes. Marketplace quotes need one more line for platform fees, which I list with the red flags for hiring an n8n freelancer.

When can I do it myself?

Do it yourself when the workflow has one trigger and two or three steps, never messages a customer, and costs little if it fails. A Starter plan covers that. If you are choosing a tool, compare billing models in n8n vs Make vs Zapier.

Pay for help when customers receive messages, money moves, or several systems depend on the result.

How do I get a number for my own project?

Write down the systems involved, how many events a day, who receives messages, and what should happen when something fails. Then book a call and bring the list.
