AI Receptionist Cost: What You Actually Pay Each Month
AI receptionist cost in 2026: per-minute platform rates, packaged plans, phone numbers, texting fees, testing and the hidden costs that show up after launch.

An HVAC company in California needed its phone answered and its service requests booked. The obvious cost question was the price per minute. The real work was elsewhere. The receptionist had to book into a dispatch board that kept transcripts and recordings, on a local number.
The first version also sounded robotic. Raising the model temperature from 0.2 to 0.75 helped, and turning on backchannel (the small "mm-hm" sounds) was the biggest win. Neither of those appears as a line on a pricing page, which is why per-minute numbers alone mislead.
Here is what the pricing pages do say, and what they leave out.
The short answer: on a build-it-yourself voice platform, Retell lists $0.07 to $0.31 per minute. A packaged plan from a vendor like Goodcall runs $79 to $299 a month depending on how many unique callers you get. A custom build adds a one-time setup and testing fee from your builder, plus the platform usage you pay directly.
What does an AI receptionist cost by scope?
| Scope | What the vendor lists | What you still pay for |
|---|---|---|
| Packaged plan (Goodcall) | $79 for 100 unique customers (about 150 calls), $129 for 500, $299 for 2,000. Extra customers cost 79 cents, 26 cents or 15 cents. Local number included, no setup fee mentioned. | Your own time to set it up and check it |
| Voice platform (Retell) | $0.07 to $0.31 per minute, $2 a month per phone number | Building, connecting and testing the agent |
| Voice platform (Vapi) | $0.05 per minute platform fee, plus transcription, model, voice and telephony from their providers. The page's estimate for 1,000 minutes is $82 to $129 a month | Building, connecting and testing the agent |
| Custom build | A one-time fee quoted by your builder | Platform usage, billed to your own account |
In a packaged plan, a "unique customer" is a phone number counted once per month, and minutes are not metered. On a platform, the meter runs per minute. Which is cheaper depends on how long your calls last.
How many minutes will you use?
Minutes drive the bill, so estimate yours from a call log. Retell tracks each call to the nearest second, and its pricing page says silence and hold time count because speech-to-text stays active. Failed calls that don't connect aren't billed. After a transfer, the AI fee stops but telephony billing continues.

Here is my arithmetic from Retell's published range. I assume an average call of 3 minutes, so check your own log.
| Minutes a month | About how many calls | At $0.07 | At $0.11 (the page's example) | At $0.31 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 300 | 100 | $21 | $33 | $93 |
| 1,000 | 333 | $70 | $110 | $310 |
| 3,000 | 1,000 | $210 | $330 | $930 |
The $0.11 figure is the page's own calculator example: $0.04 for the model, $0.055 for infrastructure, $0.015 for the voice and nothing for telephony.
How much do the model and the voice change the price?
A lot. At standard speed, Retell lists models from $0.0016 a minute (GPT 5 nano) to $0.32 (GPT 6 Astra). GPT 5.5, one of the models it recommends, costs $0.16, or $0.32 on the fast tier. Voices run $0.015 a minute on several providers, and $0.04 to $0.10 for ElevenLabs voices.
Cheaper is not always worse, and dearer is not always better. In the HVAC build, a hidden cause of the robotic sound was a temperature setting, which costs nothing to change. For clinics in the Dominican Republic, the Spanish sounded wrong until the voice matched the language: the first one had an American accent and ran on a fast English model, and an empty voice model setting added a robotic tone. Test the voice on your callers before you pick a tier.
What do phone numbers and telephony add?
Retell lists $2 a month per phone number and $0.015 a minute for telephony, with no charge for your own SIP trunk. Vapi leaves telephony to the provider: its page lists Twilio at $0.008 a minute inbound and Telnyx at $0.0055. Goodcall includes a local number or lets you forward your existing one.
Which add-ons are worth paying for?
Check these before you sign:
- Retell adds $0.005 a minute each for a knowledge base, advanced denoising and safety guardrails, and $0.01 for PII removal.
- Retell's AI quality assurance gives 100 minutes free, then $0.10 a minute.
- Vapi lists HIPAA compliance as a $2,000 a month add-on. If you need it, ask before you choose a platform.
What does texting cost?
If your receptionist or workflow texts callers in the US, you need carrier registration. HighLevel's A2P fee page lists a one-time bundled fee of $22.50 for Sole Proprietor and Low Volume Standard brands and $64.00 for High Volume Standard brands. Monthly campaign fees run $2.00 for Sole Proprietor, $10.00 for standard use cases and $1.50 for Low Volume Mixed.
Registration can also fail. The HVAC company's registration was rejected, so its texts had to wait and email did the follow-up in the meantime. A voice agent that texts a link also needs an A2P-registered number. Read my guide to GoHighLevel A2P and the one on missed call text back before you budget for SMS.
What do setup and testing cost?
Platform testing is cheap. In my test setup, one graded phone test run cost about $1.80 and one text run about $0.23. A 24-question suite, run by text and by phone, found seven problems in a med spa receptionist before any patient called.
The expensive part is the builder's time. Ask for setup and testing as one itemized fee, with a test report included. The AI automation consultant hiring guide lists what that report should show.
What costs show up after launch?
These are the ones I have run into:
- One balance behind many numbers. On a California life insurance build, 8 numbers ran on a single prepaid voice balance. When it emptied, every one of them stopped answering.
- Failures logged as success. At a Pennsylvania med spa, the credit ran out but the run log kept saying "success". The real count: 79 dials that failed, and 11 Facebook leads nobody ever called.
- Calls you can't see. For a fuel distributor in Ireland, 97 calls were missing from the dashboard. Backfilling them took it from 218 to 315 calls, so roughly a third of the traffic had been invisible.
Budget for a low-balance alert, a monitor that checks for silence, and a monthly look at the call log.
When is doing it yourself fine?
A packaged plan or a do-it-yourself platform is fine when the agent only answers questions and takes a message, your volume is low, and a missed detail costs you little. You can switch it on for a weekend and read the transcripts.
Pay for a custom build when the receptionist must write to your calendar, CRM or dispatch board, qualify callers, or hand off to staff. Those tools are where the failures hide. My HVAC build and the notes on how AI receptionists work show where.

FAQ
How much does an AI receptionist cost per month?
For a small business, a packaged plan starts at $79 a month on one vendor's page. On a voice platform, 1,000 minutes costs about $70 to $310 at Retell's published range, before phone numbers and texting fees. A custom build adds the builder's one-time fee.
Is per-minute or a flat plan cheaper?
It depends on call length and on how often the same people call. A flat plan counts unique callers, so long calls and repeat callers cost nothing extra. A per-minute platform bills every second, so short calls are cheap there, but you build and test the agent yourself.
Do I pay for calls the AI transfers to my staff?
Partly. On Retell, the AI fee stops after a transfer, but telephony billing continues for the rest of the call.
Do I need a separate phone number?
Not always. Retell lists $2 a month per number, while Goodcall includes a local number or lets you forward your existing line.
Can I test an AI receptionist cheaply before launch?
Yes. Retell gives new pay-as-you-go accounts $10 in free credit, and a text-based test run costs cents. Run the test calls to a test contact first, and check every booking against your calendar.
